Choosing Which Algae Strain to Grow

November 16, 2011

Choosing Which Algae Strain to Grow

Choosing which algae strain to grow is a very large decision. This sets the foundation for everything. Making the right choice can save you.

Do your research before you place an order. NCBI is a good web site to find papers written about specific algae. For instance do you want to grow a fresh or salt water strain? Make a list of how you want your algae to grow. Start your list general and focus on your main objective then get specific. The more specific the better. Good examples to consider are growth rates, nutrient requirements, light requirements, motile or nonmotile, large or small cell size and algae that form chains or algae that clump or algae that grow on the top layer of water. You will realize how quickly the number of possible strains to choose from gets really small very quickly.
