Haematococcus pluvalis AE 9 (HP) is exclusive to Algae Expert. It was isolated in Texas in 2015. Haematococcus pluvialis has a motile and vegetative stage. This is important to know when you look under the microscope. We have a picture of each phase to help you see the difference. Some cells swim around and other cells look like a big green ball that may turn orange to red depending on the growing conditions. Here are some notes about growing this strain that you may find helpful. HP AE 9 is known to have increased growth rates and grows in warmer climates compared to other Haematococcus strains.
Successful growing of HP :
Conditions need to be optimal to keep the cells in motile phase. Higher growth rates have been recorded compared to other Haematococcus pluvialis strains. In general Haematococcus pluvalis prefers low-moderate and prefers little change in lighting conditions during motile phase. Temperatures grown here are at 65 – 75 degrees F but tolerates warmer temperatures. Haematococcus pluvalis is well known for the astaxanthin that is produced when stressed. There are many methods for stressing cells to produce astaxanthin. If you would like to know more about growing conditions please ask the expert.
Notes on preferred growing conditions. This is a freshwater harder water species. Prefers little to no salt in the water. We use a constant intensity of light at 2500 Lux with a periodicity of 12:12 hour light : dark cycle. Temperatures grown here are at 65- 75 degrees F but prefers cool temperatures. This strain is only sold here. It grows faster compared to other culture collection strains. This product is grown commercially for astaxanthin and carotenoids.
