Why grow algae?
When speaking to people about what I do, the first question is,” Why grow algae?”
Part of getting to know people is asking what they enjoy doing. When I am asked I say, ” I grow algae,” the fist question is why? Algae is grown for a specific product. You use products extracted from algae almost every day. Let us show you some everyday products that have algae. Ice cream may have algae in it in the form of agar. It thickens ice cream and helps slow down the melting process so you have enough time to eat the ice cream from the cone. You may have heard of some algae superstars while shopping at the grocery store. Spirulina and Chlorella are high in protein and are found in protein shakes, healthy smoothies, and some protein bars. Other examples of algae products are pharmaceutical supplements like astaxanthin, biodegradable plastics, gas to fill your car up, dyes and cosmetics. The list goes on and on. Algae is the most diverse organism on the plant. This diversity of algae leads to a wealth of products that can be grown sustainability and naturally.
